Paying for childcare: the options
The Government offers help in the form of Working Tax Credit, which you are eligible for if you and your partner work for more than 16 hours a week. It covers up to 80% of eligible childcare costs – set at £175 per week for one child and £300 per week for two or more children – and the childminder you use must be registered. Some employers also help financially, although this is not a legal obligation. There are three types of financial help available through your employer: workplace childcare provision; employer-contracted or directly contracted childcare; and childcare vouchers. A proportion of these benefits, £55 per week, is exempt from tax and National Insurance. Tax Credit Helpline 0845 300 3900
